The Shona word for lion is Mondoro and the name Old Mondoro derives from the local legend of an old, white lion that used to frequent the area.
Although the old white lion has long gone, Old Mondoro reflects the wild spirit that lives on in his descendants that still roam free in this unique part of Africa.
Old Mondoro is set in a grove of Acacia trees that tower above the massive elephant bulls that seem to be constantly feeding on the same. With only 8 beds Old Mondoro is the Lower Zambezi’s most intimate and private safari camp.
Eight beds in four bush chalets, on the banks of the Zambezi deep inside the Park 35 kms downstream from Chiawa Camp.
King size bed (or 2 x singles) in each, en-suite indoor flush loos, outdoor shower & 24/7 hot water.
Electric lights/charging 220v in rooms.
Walks, drives, boating, canoeing and tiger fishing.
We recommend 2-3 nights at Old Mondoro combined with 3 nights at Chiawa for the ultimate Lower Zambezi safari.
Whilst its sister camp Chiawa Camp is more luxurious and sophisticated, guests will also enjoy the very different and “back to the bush” atmosphere of Old Mondoro.
The concept of Old Mondoro is simple – to step back from the larger, ultra-luxurious lodges and provide guests with an authentic remote safari that concentrates on the wildlife and bush experience whilst not foregoing any necessary creature comforts.
Lower Zambezi National Park offers excellent game viewing throughout, with there being more elephant, lion and buffalo activity closer to Chiawa Camp, and Old Mondoro’s area to the east which seems to deliver more frequent leopard and serval sightings, and more plains game such as Zebra and Kudu.
