Get to grips with the real South Africa by taking a walking tour of the Cape townships, impoverished communities on the outskirts of town. Visit the historic Malay quarter and District Six, and join our private boat trip to the infamous Robben Island where political prisoners and struggle heroes were incarcerated.

NB: This is a full day tour, but if you do Robben Island or townships alone it can be shortened to a half day.

This cultural tour begins with a visit to the townships on the outskirts of Cape Town. While these shantytowns are incredibly poor they do offer an insight into the real experience of many South Africans. What's more, the townships are real centres of community and tell an inspiring story of the power of the human spirit to prevail even in the most desperate of circumstances.

We explore the historic Bo-Kaap, traditionally the Malay quarter, as well as District Six and its living museum. After lunch in the city, hop aboard our exclusive boat to the infamous Robben Island located off the coast of Cape Town. Our boat is limited to a maximum of 12 people and provides a tailormade tour of the island with a private guide.

Nelson Mandela spent most of his 27 years in prison here, and you can visit his cell and see first-hand the conditions which he and other political prisoners were subjected to. Robben Island is now a museum and it is a powerful reminder of the troubles and triumphs that South Africa experienced on its way to democracy.
