Amakhala Game Reserve is a 40 minute drive from Port Elizabeth. The reserve began in 1999 as a
joint conservation venture with six independently owned lodges, each managed by the descendants
of the original families who arrived with the British settlers of 1820. This is a unique conservation
initiative that allows animals to be re-introduced to the area where they once roamed freely and so
making a contribution to nature conservation . We feature three lodges – all offering ‘home-fromhome’
hospitality:
Woodbury Tented Camp (3*)
Set in the heart of Amakhala Game Reserve,
overlooking the majestic plains where zebra and
wildebeest roam. Tranquil surroundings and comfortable
canvas tents allow guests to experience the bush at its
best. The centre of the camp is an airy, thatched
entertainment area, where you can soak up the African
sun. Looking out over spectacular views of game-filled
plains, this magical setting provides an outdoor feeling
to complement delicious traditional meals. The tents are
comfortably fitted out as bedrooms with en-suite
bathrooms. Children of all ages are welcome.
Carnavon Dale (3*)
This consists of the 1820 Settler farmhouse and
an elegantly restored early Edwardian cottage. A
sparkling swimming pool set in large gardens offer
complete relaxation and peace.
Delicious farm-style meals are served in the
main dining room. Morning and late afternoon guided
game drives in an open Land Rover are arranged to suit
clients’ personal needs. In the evenings there are new
friends to be made over cool sundowners and stories of
bygone days to entertain you around a “braaivleis” fire under South African stars. Children of all
ages are welcome.
Reed Valley Inn (4*)
Reed Valley has a long history. The main house
is estimated to have been built in 1806. Through time,
many farming enterprises such as cows, sheep,
ostriches, crocodiles, pineapples and dairy have had
their successes and failures. This colonial lodge
encompasses South Africa’s historical past and provides
a personalised homely experience.
Reed Valley Inn is nestled in a farmyard and is comprised of four historic en-suite country
rooms, which once provided rest and safety for the travellers on the mail wagon. Each room has a
separate entrance on to a private patio. Children over 12 welcome.
