Day 2) The journey leads us into the Kunene (Kaokoland) region along the C35 and we arrive after 300km of at the Ruacana Falls. From here we follow the Kunene River which borders Angola on the opposite embankment. We reach Kunene River Lodge early afternoon. The place offers a fantastic view of the river and is a bird watchers paradise. Activities like canoeing are optional (extra) and can be arranged Camping at Kunene River Lodge
Day 3) Today a challenging stretch lies ahead as we drive on fairly bad roads along the Kunene River to Epupa Falls. The 90 km drive will take us around 7 hours, but amazing scenery awards us. At Epupa we also have a chance to visit a local Himba village and learn about their customs. We camp near the rapids at Epupa Falls.
Day 4) We drive along famed ‘Kaokoland roads’ via Etanga and Okongwati (last petrol station) to the famed and feared “Van Zyls Pass”. This route can be a little challenging and difficult, but very rewarding with fantastic landscapes and wilflife. We camp at a pleasant new community campsite next to a dry river.
Day 5) Carefully we negotiate the Van Zyl’s pass, a challenge for any 4x4 driver! We leave civilization completely behind us as we travel northwards through majestic untouched landscapes into the Marienfluss and Hartmans Vallley. We camp in the wilderness.
Day 6+7) Away from the touristic routes we explore the scenery and marvel at the mysterious ‘fairy circles’ which abound everywhere. Large numbers of springbok and oryx may be seen at the open plains. Camping in the wilderness
Day 8) We travel along the borders of the Skeleton Coast southwards to “green drum” and further to Agri Fria, which offers a wonderful rugged scenery, where we camp in the wilderness again.
Day 9) We stay at the coast and explore this remote region; the coastline has always been treacherous for seafarers We may see giant whale bones and bird colonies and lonely jackals roaming the desert for some prey.
Camping in the wilderness.
Day 10) We travel along the Atlantic Ocean to the Khumib River where we camp in the wilderness.
Day 11) The journey leads us from the Khumib river through picturesque bush landscapes interspersed by open desert plains to the famous Damara settlement at Purros. Desert adapted animals like Springbok, Oryx, Ostrich and bat-eared foxes are often seen during the trip. Giraffe and desert elephant also frequent this area. We camp under shady tamarisk and camelthorn trees at Purros Camp ground with facilities.
Day 12) Today we carry on further along the Hoarusib River for about 40km, turning southwards to the Hoanib River. This is the most interesting river with its large populations of desert elephants, giraffe, oryx and springbok. We will erect our base camp at a scenic spot in the dry river bed.
Day 13) We shall explore this spectacular environment during game drives.
Day 14) The road takes us southwards again along civilized gravel roads to Sesfontein, Palmwag to Camp Xaragu in the Twyfelfontein Area.
Day 15) We explore another dry river environment for 40 km as we drive through the Huab River where we experience some more adventurous driving. This is the home of the rare Desert Elephants, which number around 600 in the Kunene region. There are only two groups of desert dwelling elephants in the world, one in Mali and the other in Namibia! These elephants have adapted to their dry and often sandy conditions by having smaller body mass and larger feet in comparison to other elephants. We spend some time watching these majestic animals before turning south to the Ugab River where we camp in the riverbed again.
Day 16) Our path leads into the Goboboseb Mountains, where we have the chance to see a lot of crystals and other minerals. Camp is set up near the impressive landscape of the Messum Crater. This vast area is also the last remaining stronghold of free ranging black rhino.
Day 17) The journey leads us back into civilization along the coast at Cape Cross, from where we travel further southwards via Henties Bay to the popular coastal resort Swakopmund. We spend the last night at a Pension on Bed & Breakfast basis and end the journey in Swakopmund.
