The South of Ethiopia is famous for its wildlife resources and the natural beauty of the territory, splendid landscapes, protected endemic species, a kaleidoscope of ethnic groups speaking over 50 languages who are deeply imbued in natural traditions. The National Park is home to an amazing range of wildlife: Oryx, Antelopes, Zebras, Gazelles, Buffalos and Elephants. Along the rivers it is very easy to see enormous Nile crocodiles and Hippopotamus.
Must see: the National Parks- Abjiata-Shalla, Nechisar, Mago, and Omo. In Omo Valley you will visit the tribes with impressive tourist attraction and natural traditions: Mursi, Hamer, Karo Galeb, Bume and Borana tribes.
When to visit the OMO Valley: The best period to visit the Southern part of Ethiopia is from August to April/May. The rainy season starts in April/May and sometimes roads are flooded and impossible to diver even for 4WD cars.
ITINERARY FOR TOUR SOUTH OMO ROUT BY SURFACE for 16 DAYS
Day 1. Arrive Addis Ababa and afternoon city tour including the National museum (not on Mondays), Entoto Mountains for views and Trinity Cathedral, Markato Africa’s biggest open market. O.N. hotel.
Day 2. In the morning drive to visit the crater lakes of Debre Zeith and the three Rift Valley lakes of Langano, Shala and Abyata, these lakes are rich in birds, such as pelicans, flamingoes, storks and more. Visit Sidamo people houses and culture. O.N. hotel.
Day 3. Continue driving to Arbaminch, in Amharic meaning 40 springs. Admire very interesting views and the Wolayta people, their villages, culture, the cultivation of the false banana tree and more. Afternoon drive to Chencha, to visit the Dorze people, their particular weaving works for which they are famous, strange houses and the false banana and others. O. N. hotel.
Day 4. Morning visit the Netch Sar park with spectacular views over the lakes and different mammals, as the endemic Swaynes Hartebeest, Zebras, lesser kudu, and others. Drive back to afternoon make a boat trip on Chamo, admire crocodiles and hippos (here crocodiles are some of the longest in Africa, with a length of 6 meters & above). O.N. hotel.
Day 5. Drive to Turmi, crossing to Derashe people and villages, with particular culture, traditions, way of life and more. and proceed to Erbore people and villages were they have very colorful hairstyles, way of dressing and living quite peculiar. Continue to the village of Turmi, of the Hammer people. Over night Turmi camping at campsite. [According to market days, program can be varied by driving first to Jinka].
Day 6 & Day 7. Visit Hammer people, their villages, possibly some dances, and more. If coincides we can see the unique marriage ceremonies, with women slashing, bull jumping and more. If the day you arrive is Monday or Saturday admire the very colorful markets of the Hamer, Karo and Dassanech tribes respectively at Turmi or Dimeka market place. These tribes are famous for their hairstyles, ornaments, scarification, culture and more. O.N. Turmi camping.
Day 8 & Day 9. Drive to Omorate, at bank of Omo River, to admire the Dassanech villages as well as bout trip on OMO River for some hours. If there is more than one vehicle, excursion to the Turkana Lake at border of Kenya can be added. Drive back O.N. Turmi camping.
Day 10. Drive to the Karo people and villages. Visit Kortcho village, with very nice views over Omo River, as Duss village. Dinner and O.N. Murulle camping, at bank of Omo River or near a village.
Day 11. Continue for the Mago National Park and camp at bank of the Neri River, admiring different animals, among which different Antelopes and birds. O.N. camping at Mago National Park.
Day 12. Proceed to the Mursi people and villages. Admire these tribes. Where for beauty women use to put clay plates into their lips, men have different scarification and more particularities, visit their way of life in the villages and other. Continue to Jinka village for O.N. camping or local hotel.
Day 13. Continue to Konso, admiring the Ari, Benna and Tsemay people. If it is a market days you can visit very colorful ones on the way. Visit then Konso famous villages and traditions. O.N. Konso Edget or St. Mary hotel.
Day 14. Continue for the Borena people and afternoon drive to Elsod crater, from where Borena men extract salt. Visit some of their villages. O.N. Yabelo local hotel or camping.
Day 15. Crossing Guji people and very nice landscapes, drive to the Rift Valley Lake of Awassa. O.N. hotel.
Day 16. Drive back to Addis crossing the rift valley passing through Abyata, Shala lakes which is reach rich for the
aquatic birds and Lake Langano and Zeway and attending a dinner in a traditional restaurant with folkloristic dances of the
different Ethiopian regions and departure.
